Time for Kids to focus on mental health

Time to Talk

WISC-TV is teaming up with SSM Health to help families live healthy and happy lives through our Time for Kids partnership. In 2017, the focus will be on mental health.

"Time for Kids: Time to Talk" will raise awareness and provide information and resources on a problem that affects about 20-percent of the population. It may seem like anxiety, depression and addiction are issues more adults face, but mental health is something young people struggle with as well.

According to the 2014 Health and Substance Abuse Needs Assessment from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, there are 15,918 youth at the county-level with mental illness and 8,338 who have a serious emotional disturbance.

Suicide is among the top ten leading cause of all death among youth in Dane County. In 2011, there were 74 suicide deaths, a 41 percent increase over the annual average of the previous five years. In 2011, there were over 835 individuals that went to the hospital for self-inflicted injuries, according to Wisconsin Interactive Statistics in Health.

Throughout the year, the campaign will cultivate conversations about mental health and emphasize the benefits of talking about it as a family and as a community. Watch for informative stories and events throughout the year, as SSM Health and WISC-TV take on a difficult and growing problem in our community.
