As winter drags on, one way to make the most of it is to try a new sport, like cross-country skiing.

Here are a few pointers on how to get started:

Start on groomed trails: According to the Cross Country Ski Areas Association, the best way to start skiing is by going on a groomed trail. These trails have an even surface with machine-made tracks.

Equipment: Skiers will need skis with bindings, boots and poles. Some locations may have equipment on site that you can rent or buy.

Take a lesson: To properly learn techniques, all beginner skiers should take a lesson before they hit the trails.

What to wear: The Cross Country Ski Areas Association recommends wearing clothing made of synthetic and wool blends. They suggest to avoid wearing cotton material since it holds in moisture.

What to bring: In addition to equipment, you should bring a water bottle, a snack, sun screen, sunglasses and lip balm.
