MADISON, Wis. -- Severe winter weather is wreaking havoc on more than roads in the area. It's also affecting area parking lots.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportAt Skyline Point Apartments, residents said the driveways are a mess of holes and pits."As you see, the potholes are so bad, so many of them that it's tearing up people's cars," said resident Clarence Talbert. He said the craters have been a problem before this winter, but now they are really testing the suspension and tires on almost every vehicle coming in and out."This damage was done by a pothole," said Talbert, pointing to his front bumper. “I rolled over it; it went blam and split it."The potholes have many renters wondering if there is a law requiring them to be fixed."The city of Madison has an ordinance that requires property owners to make their parking areas, apartment complexes, shopping malls, strip malls, things of that nature maintain their parking areas basically free of potholes," said George Hank, director of the City of Madison Building Inspection Unit.Although Skyline Point is in the Town of Madison, inspectors there said potholes restrict emergency vehicles so they must be repaired.Residents are advised to first report potholes to management. If they aren't permanently filled within a month, contact a building inspector, officials said. The penalties to landlords range from $170 to $370 fines. Jeff Meyer, the manager at Skyline Point Apartments, said that the potholes will be fixed this week.Town of Madison Building Inspector Dan Eklof said that a complaint came in about the apartment complex on Thursday.Related Info:
