Low-Fat Dairy May Lower Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes In Men

Posted: 3:24 pm CDT May 9, 2005

Men may want to add low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese to their grocery lists.

A new study on more than 40,000 men suggests those who eat low-fat dairy products each day may reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the most common form.

But researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Harvard School of Public Health don't know why. Scientists say it could be attributed to the whey proteins or magnesium, which are thought to enhance how insulin regulates blood sugar. But those ingredients are also found in high-fat dairy products, which didn't seem to help.

The study appears in Monday's edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
