MADISON, Wis. -- Gov. Jim Doyle said a court ruling blocking funding for embryonic stem cell research could be detrimental to Wisconsin's growing biotechnology industry. At a news conference at the Waisman Center on the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Tuesday, the governor said Wisconsin has offered to help the U.S. Department of Justice appeal last month's ruling. The governor said the state will provide evidence showing how the ruling is hurting Wisconsin and will file a friend-of-the-court brief in the case.Doyle said he understands the controversy surrounding stem cell research."There are ethical lines that are followed very, very strictly. But let's let the scientists tell us where the science is leading and not the politicians," Doyle said.U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth temporarily blocked government-funded stem cell work after concluding a pending lawsuit against President Barack Obama's policy was likely to succeed.Doyle was also expected to talk about the $750 million initiative at the Institutes for Discovery on the University of Wisconsin campus. The campus is set to open in December. The institute is the centerpiece of the governor's $750 million initiative to develop stem cell research and biotechnology in Wisconsin, WISC-TV reported.
