MADISON, Wis. -- Local health officials announced on Friday that they plan to suspend all school flu vaccination clinics scheduled after Monday because of dwindling supplies of the H1N1 vaccine.
READ: H1N1 Flu SectionPublic Health -- Madison and Dane County officials said that they would run out of supplies of the H1N1 flu vaccine by next Monday. They said that they expect new shipments to arrive "in the weeks ahead," but said that they couldn't predict when or the quantity.Last week, officials outlined a plan to administer the vaccine to all students in Dane County. Public health workers were going to schools throughout Dane County and the effort was to continue for the next five weeks.Officials said that they hope to resume the clinics in November, but they said that new shipments of the vaccine will now be allocated to target groups in "greatest need.""We are going to reserve the first couple of shipments for those that are most in need of H1N1 vaccinations. Those are pregnant women and those with underlying medical conditions," said Dr. Thomas Schlenker, director of Public Health -- Madison and Dane County. "We will set up special clinics for special groups of people, and we will let the public know when and where and which groups are being targeted."The groups includes health care workers, pregnant women, anyone who lives with an infant aged 6 months or less, day care providers, children aged 6 months to 4 years old and children who have medical conditions that put them a higher risk for flu-related complications.Officials said that once supplies become more abundant, they will resume the school-based clinics.Nationwide, lower than expected production of the H1N1 vaccine has led to decreased and delayed shipments to health care entities. For more information, visit the Public Health -- Madison and Dane County Web site.
