UW Won't Issue H1N1 Numbers

Campus Health Official Says Numbers Would Be Inaccurate

Updated: 10:51 am CDT September 3, 2009

University of Wisconsin-Madison officials are defending their decision not to release any specific number of H1N1 flu virus cases.

Dr. Sarah Van Orman, executive director of UW Health Services, said issuing case numbers regarding the so-called swine flu would be largely inaccurate since there are too many factors to consider. Instead, UW officials are focusing its resources on managing the virus' outbreaks.

Earlier this week, UW Chancellor Biddy Martin urged employees and students to stay home when they are sick to control the spread of flu.

A UW committee has been drawing up plans to continue operating should an outbreak of H1N1 hit campus. The plans include how to maintain critical research projects and hold classes using long-distance technology should that be necessary.
