Eye On Health: Plastic Surgery, Part II

Did The Liposuction Work?

POSTED: 8:24 am CST January 15, 2003

How far would you go to change the way you look? Would you have cosmetic surgery? A Waunakee woman decided it was right for her.

In part two of Carleen Wild's special report, we follow her into the operating room.

PLASTIC SURGERY

After years of battling her weight, Emily Schuster, 23, decided to see if liposuction could give her the results diets and exercise never could.

Only days before Emily was scheduled for surgery, News 3 went along to her final pre-op appointment.

"[I'm] more nervous about anesthesia, not about the procedure," she said.

The doctor took a lot of pictures of her to use to plan the surgery.

"The incisions are put in areas not visible," said Dr. Karol Gutowski, of the UW medical school and an assistant professor of cosmetic surgery. "We put them in areas that are usually not visible when wearing clothes, even bathing suits."

Emily is having her thighs and abdomen treated -- a very routine procedure these days, News 3 reported.

Because of its success, liposuction has quickly become among the top cosmetic surgeries requested.

Emily, an hour into her procedure, is also hoping for good results.

Before any fat can be removed, a medicated solution is injected.

It hardens the fat so that it can be more easily removed, and it reduces blood loss.

A long narrow tube is then used to vacuum the layer of fat deep beneath the skin.

Gutowski says its important people understand what liposuction is really about.

It is not a cure for weight loss -- it's for contouring, which means it's not for everyone. Emily is considered the perfect candidate.

"The people who do well with it are unresponsive to dieting, exercise," Gutowski said. "The age for something like this, isn't that much of a detriment at a young age. Fat will shrink back down. She won't have droopy skin."

To be sure, Emily will be put into a compression garment immediately after surgery.

She'll wear it every minute of every day, for at least two weeks.

The end result?

"In three months, see flattening of abs in front, thighs contoured more," Gutowski said.
