Dietary Guidelines Offer New Challenges

New federal dietary guidelines offer a new challenge for Americans.

The National Academy of Sciences recently issued new guidelines that contain a slight shift in recommendations for nutrients and a big shift for physical activity suggestions.

The guidelines recommend Americans should consume 45 percent to 65 percent of their daily calories from carbohydrates, 10 percent to 35 percent from protein and 20 percent to 35 percent from fat.

In a new recommendation that doubles previous levels, the academy recommends Americans get one hour of physical activity each day.

This may sound like a lot, but this activity can be in the form of walking your dog or taking the stairs at work. It's also important to note that this hour can be spread out during the day.
