BELOIT, Wis. -- Beloit firefighters spent an exhausting holiday weekend responding to an unusually high number of emergency calls.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportFrom Friday, July 4, through Sunday, July 6, the Beloit Fire Department said it responded to 80 calls. In fact, Sunday broke the department's record for most calls in one day with 27, WISC-TV reported.Department leadership said that they aren't staffed to handle that kind of call volume on a daily basis. The city of Beloit only has two paramedic-staffed ambulances and a third ambulance that can use fire crews to run it, if needed.Deputy Fire Chief Bryan Northrop said staffing was the problem during the weekend, along with calls from people who didn't need an ambulance."It's frustrating for the crews because obviously, they're trying to be out there doing the best they can, and trying to get to every call they can get to, but when people call the ambulance that don't need one, that's frustrating," said Northrop. "Because many times, the crews will get to the hospital and there will be people at the hospital who needed an ambulance, but someone just drove them up here, which is very risky."Northrop said the department has asked for more staff. It would like to add six positions, two more on each shift to staff the third ambulance. So far, those requests have gone unanswered because of a strapped city budget and revenue caps. Beloit City Manager Larry Arft said that all city departments have been taxed in Beloit this year, especially because of the recent floods. In comparison, the Beloit Police Department had 686 calls for service during the holiday weekend, WISC-TV reported.
