Some Residents Will Still Have Social Security Numbers As Identifiers

Doyle Asked State Agencies To Stop Using Social Security Numbers

UPDATED: 1:14 pm CDT April 21, 2008

Even after the state moves away from using Social Security numbers as identifiers for Medicaid recipients, those who also receive Medicare won't get new random identification numbers.

About 90,000 people will still be identified by their Social Security numbers even after the switch in October. About 900,000 will get a new random ID number.

State health officials said that the numbers have to still be used to confer with the federal agency that runs Medicare.

Gov. Jim Doyle has told state agencies to stop using Social Security numbers whenever possible. The state Department of Administration has yet to compile a list of agencies still using the numbers.
