MADISON, Wis. -- The work of a local retired doctor is being recognized after a new federal law helping wounded veterans was passed in his name. The Dr. James C. Allen Veteran Vision Equity Act helps veterans who suffered significant vision loss while serving their country. The law allows disabled vets to receive more compensation for losing sight in one of their eyes, WISC-TV reported. An ophthalmologist and veteran himself, Allen worked at the Madison Veterans Hospital and was honored at First Congregational Church on Sunday."This is really a way that we act out the parable of the Good Samaritan in helping others," said Rev. Jerry Hancock"I'd like to thank Tammy Baldwin again because it was her and her staff that really kept this going, kept it alive and got this for our veterans," said Allen.Allen said he worked with Rep. Baldwin for seven years to pass the law, but he said veterans are now starting to get help for their vision loss.
