Legislators Consider Electronic Recycling Program

Group Spoke Against Measure Wednesday

Electronics manufacturers would be required to arrange for the collecting and recycling of products they sell in Wisconsin under a bill up for a vote in the state Senate on Tuesday.

Environmental groups, recycling organizations and the city of Milwaukee are among those supporting the proposal that is modeled after a Minnesota law that took effect in 2007.

An electronics industry group spoke against the measure at a public hearing on Wednesday. Information Technology Industry Council spokeswoman Valerie Rickman said a requirement that 80 of product produced in a single year be recycled was too onerous.

Supporters say both consumers and manufacturers want to recycle, but there aren't enough opportunities available to easily do it.
