Firm Tied To Lt. Gov. Settles Pollution Case

State Complaint Filed Last Year

Updated: 5:33 pm CDT June 1, 2009

A company partly owned by Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton's family will pay $325,000 for violating Wisconsin pollution laws at a De Pere foundry.

A settlement approved Friday requires the C.A. Lawton Co. to pay the state $65,000 each year through 2013 to end a long-running dispute with the state Department of Natural Resources.

A state complaint filed last year claimed the foundry failed to test for pollution emissions as required, failed to meet requirements for the height of smoke stacks and didn't reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds as much as required.

Spokesman Ben Nuckels said Lawton and her husband are minority shareholders of the company.
