Verona Senior Center Seeks Electric Car To Provide Service

High Gas Prices Driving Desire For Electric Car

UPDATED: 8:05 am CDT July 9, 2008

A local senior center is trying to go green, sparked in large part by high gas prices.

VIDEO: Watch The Report

The Verona Senior Center wants to buy an electric car, but the city needs a new ordinance to allow the cars on city roads.

Some residents worry at maximum speeds of only 25 mph, that the electric cars could be a safety hazard, WISC-TV reported.

But center officials said gas prices are making it hard for them to help seniors -- delivering meals, picking up prescriptions or dry cleaning.

"It could get great use ... things like that," said Diane Lanaville, of the Verona Senior Center.

The cost would be about $8,000 and would be paid through fundraisers and donations, WISC-TV reported.
