MADISON, Wis. -- Gov. Jim Doyle signed a memorandum of understanding between the United Kingdom and Wisconsin on global warming on Monday.

The UK also has similar agreements with Florida and California.

The agreement encourages collaboration between Wisconsin and the UK in researching and sharing new technologies, experiences, and solutions, as well as efforts to educate the public on global climate issues.

The agreement is focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions while also improving the economy. It seeks to promote low carbon technology on a global scale.

Doyle said that the collaboration with the UK can only do more to generate new technologies, new businesses and new jobs for citizens.

The governor said that by combining Wisconsin's knowledge, skills and resources with those of the UK, they can develop the solutions necessary for a clean energy future..

Hilary Benn, the UK secretary of state for environment and rural affairs and a member of the British Parliament, was on hand at the ceremony.

"It would be hard to find an issue that exemplifies the challenges we have as a world if temperatures are allowed to increase," Benn said.
