Local Group Working To Get Word Out About Dangerous Fish Consumption

Meeting Set For Monday

UPDATED: 8:54 am CDT May 5, 2008

A local environmental group is trying to get the word out to shoreline anglers that some fish consumption isn't advised.

The Madison Environmental Justice Organization is working to distribute pamphlets in different languages to anglers, especially in the Latino and Hmong communities, WISC-TV reported.

"The people who are most likely to eat a lot of fish are anglers who tend to be minorities and poor," said organization spokeswoman Maria Powell. "Those people using fish as a food source are less likely to get that information and of course more likely to be exposed because they're eating it."

The Environmental Justice Organization is holding a public meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at the Madison Central Library. The group will address lake clean up efforts and healthy ways to eat fish.
