DNR, National Guard To Airlift Trees Into Kettle Moraine State Forest

Officials: 25 Trees To Be Moved

UPDATED: 2:54 pm CST March 3, 2008

State officials said that they're taking new measures to improve biodiversity in the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

The state Department of Natural Resources said that it will airlift 25 trees into the forest's Northern Unit on Wednesday.

The U.S. Army National Guard's West Bend Unit will help, using helicopters to lift the trees, according to DNR officials.

Each tree weighs about 1,250 pounds. The DNR said that the trees will be deposited in clusters of five randomly along the 1,000-foot section of Long Lake's shoreline.

The Northern Unit is about 45 minutes north of Milwaukee.
