Official Says San Francisco, Ann Arbor Have Banned Bottled Water At Public Events

MADISON, Wis. -- Madison might be enhancing its reputation for environmentalism this year.
TALKBACK: What Do You Think?The city's Commission on the Environment is expected to consider banning plastic grocery bags and bottled water at public events .Members voted unanimously at the end of last year to put those proposals on upcoming agendas this year.
Commission chairman Jon Standridge said that several U.S. cities already prohibit retail stores from providing plastic shopping bags.He also cited San Francisco and Ann Arbor, Mich., as some cities that don't allow bottled water to be sold at public events.Peter Birschbach, the plant manager for Premium Waters in Chippewa Falls, said that the International Bottled Water Association is fighting proposed bans.He said that proper disposal of bottles is better addressed through education than legislation.
