MADISON, Wis. -- A local company best known for landscaping is working to make a difference by recycling roofing shingles.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportSince last summer, the Bruce Company has been grinding used asphalt-roofing shingles, known as tear-offs, and selling the fine powder to asphalt plants. The effort not only saves money and oil but it also keeps the shingles out of landfills.
"Recycled shingles contain 40 percent liquid asphalt. And that's where the value is to the asphalt companies, because liquid asphalt right now is $325 a liquid ton. You can offset some of that cost by using the ground shingles," said Brian Mullen, recycling division manager for the Bruce Company.Late this year, the Bruce Company said it is expanding its recycling efforts to more construction materials, including dry wall, wood, paper, metal, carpet and brick.
