Leaders Tour DeForest Biodiesel Plant

DeFOREST, Wis. -- Community members and business leaders toured the state's newest biodiesel plant in DeForest on Tuesday.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportThe Sanimax biodiesel plant collects animal fats and vegetable oils and turns them into clean-burning automotive fuel. In one year, the plant will produce 20 million gallons of biodiesel fuel that can be used in anything from trucks to tractors to ships.By using raw materials, the plant said it provides an essential service to food and agribusinesses.
"This is a unique (plant). We are able to use not only soybean oil, which most plants are using, but we're able to use other products that our company produces like cooking grease, restaurant grease, animal fats and oils and other products that are being worked out right now," said Michael Langenhorst, president and CEO of Sanimax.Langenhorst said that he hopes work at the plant will make steps toward creating energy independence for the United States.The Sanimax plant opened in March.
