If you're interested in drinking "green" wines, expand your horizons with wines that are not certified organic. Many vineyards that utilize organic practices choose not to go through the certification process because of the tremendous expense. Others see it as an unnecessary step. Bland but organic wine is becoming commonplace, but there are numerous vineyards practicing sustainable agriculture while creating fabulous wines.

Wild Hog Vineyards produces some of the most hedonistic, bold red wines in California. From Zinfandel to Pinot Noir, this small vineyard creates big but balanced wines that will surprise you with their power and elegance. Although Wild Hog has been certified organic in California since 1981, many purveyors do not highlight these wines in the organic section, so seek them out!

Mas de Gourgonnier releases lovely Provencal table wines every year. Their dry rosé is an ideal summer sipper, and their reds are always highly anticipated. Consistently yummy for the money, Mas may just become your autumn staple when the new vintage arrives in the fall. If you fear the dreaded "red wine headache," see if the Mas doesn't cure you of your ailment.

Catena Zapata sits at the forefront of winemaking in Argentina. They use sustainable practices to make everything from an inexpensive Viognier (under the Alamos label) to single vineyard Malbec. Across the board, their wines are expressive and well-structured.

Domaine Serene is best known for its Pinot Noir, though this Oregon vineyard also dabbles with Syrah and Chardonnay. The winemaker, a former Madisonian, has wholeheartedly taken up green practices. Pamper yourself with one of their top-shelf wines.
