Beaver Dam Students Shave Heads, Raise Money

Students Celebrate 'St. Baldrick's Day'

Beaver Dam High School students were fundraising for a different cause and in an unusual way on Wednesday.

Some students were celebrating what they call "St. Baldrick's Day" by shaving their heads for charity. Students raised money from the community to donate to childhood cancer at.

The student's goal was $10,000, which they came out well-ahead of raising more than $14,000.

"It's a way to show kids how horrible we think it is, everything they have to deal with. On top of it, they have to be bald, they have no choice on whether to lose their hair during treatment so we wanted to show them that we'll be bald too and we'll try to raise money so that you don't have to be bald someday," said event coordinator Carrie Ketchem.

After the success of Wednesday's event, coordinators hope to hold more fundraisers in the future.

One of those who got their head shaved is Paul Devries. His daughter, Ida, was diagnosed with stage-four liver cancer in 2006 when she was just a few months old. The girl was given just a 30-percent chance to live, but she has now beaten the odds.

Paul's wife, Melissa Devries, said that they're happy their daughter is fighting back.

"She just turned 5 (years old) in January and she has been cancer free for almost three years now. So, we're just happy she's here and healthy. She gets checked again next week so we'll see what that brings us," she said.

Ida's parents said that Wednesday's event fills them with gratitude toward the entire community coming together to raise money to help other children like their daughter.
