United Way Tutoring Program Gets Stimulus Money

Six Paid Positions Added

Updated: 12:10 pm CDT June 19, 2009

The United Way's tutoring program Schools of Hope is getting stimulus money.

The program will use nearly $73,000 to create six new tutor coordinator positions. They will organize more than 200 volunteers at Madison West, Madison Memorial, Madison La Follette and Middleton High Schools.

The program offers one-on-one tutoring to as many at 800 students, and the addition of the new coordinators means more volunteer tutors are needed.

“Come September when we really put that push out, we hope that there are people in our community who love high school students,” said Kathy Hubbard, of the United Way of Dane County. “That’s what this is about -- tutoring high school students and becoming mentors with them.”

Volunteers are needed at every grade level in math and reading. More information on volunteering or applying for the new coordinator positions can be found at www.unitedwaydanecounty.org.
