Catholic Multicultural Center To Reopen

Local Parish Will Take Over Operations

Updated: 8:23 am CDT June 6,2009

The Catholic Diocese of Madison said it's "grateful" for a new parish plan that will reopen the Catholic Multicultural Center one week after it closed.

But some supporters of the center said the diocese should apologize for closing it in the first place. They said they're upset the center isn't reopening right away and think the diocese "mishandled" the situation.

Other center supporters said the diocese has worked diligently with them to reopen the center that was shuttered due to a lack of donations.

Last month, the diocese cited budget problems, enacted staff cutbacks and said the center would have to close in less than two days.

The facility offered free meals, a food pantry, English as a second language classes and health care for those in need.

But a week of community pleas and outrage later, the Madison bishop has sanctioned a parish plan that has Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Madison assuming primary responsibility for the center's operations.

"We're really looking to be in collaboration and partnership with the entire city of Madison," said Michelle Horton, social action director at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish.

Horton talked to her pastor, the Rev. Kenneth Fiedler, about going to the diocese with the plan to assume primary responsibility for the operation of the center. Bishop Robert Morlino apparently officially approved the plan Thursday night.

Our Lady Queen of Peace officials said they are launching a community-wide grassroots plan to raise money and keep the center for the needy going. The 2,700-family parish will be spearheading the effort.

"We're not looking to take away funds away from any other organizations, we're just asking people to dig a little deeper," Horton said.

Fiedler and his parish will be supported by pastors and parishioners from other area churches.

The Catholic Multicultural Center's former director, Andy Russell, said a new budget is needed before a date for reopening can be set. It's not clear how many staff there will be or which programs will be cut or grown.

"A lot of planning has to happen, and of course we have to raise some more funds before the doors open. We don't want the center to open and then close again, so we want to make sure that it's secure," Russell said Friday at the announcement.

The Rev. Daniel Ganshert, vicar general of the Diocese of Madison, said of Bishop Robert Morlino, who is in Rome on business, "I know he is very grateful."

Ganshert said the bishop is "deeply appreciative" of the parish-centered effort. Ganshert said that the closing had to happen quickly.

Still, some individual Catholics said the diocese has financial reserves and never should have closed the center to begin with.

Tim Huegerich said he would like to hear an apology.

"I would just like to see just a simple apology that they made some mistakes, and I think that would go a long way to restore the trust of the people of Madison," Huegerich said.

Huegerich helped raised $10,000 on a Facebook page to get the center reopened, but he said his views on the diocese handling of the situation are personal and don't necessarily represent any of the people who contributed.

The diocese on Friday said it had to shut down the center fast because two weeks ago it got numbers on its new annual fundraiser or "Annual Catholic Appeal" that showed donations were way down.

Ganshert said the diocese had hoped to raise $3.7 million but raised only $1 million.

A small portion of the $1 million, 9.4 percent, will still go toward the center, officials said.
