Multicultural Center's Closing Forces Other Agencies To Fill Void

Madison Diocese Reportedly Does Not Plan To Sell Property

Updated: 9:48 am CDT June 4, 2009

Madison-area social service agencies said Wednesday the Roman Catholic Diocese of Madison doesn't plan to sell the property housing the former Catholic Multicultural Center.

The center, formerly located at 1862 Beld Street, was recently ordered closed by Bishop Robert Morlino, citing budget concerns. The diocese reportedly plans to see if another agency wants to take over the building's operations. Our Lady Queen of Peace is looking at possibly taking over operation of the site, WISC-TV reported.

Meanwhile, other groups that serve those in need are brainstorming following the closing of the Catholic Multicultural Center.

The goal is to find a way to continue offering some of the same services at other sites, said Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, a member of the Executive Committee of the Latino Support Network, or LaSUP.

Members of LaSUP, the Literacy Network, Jewish Social Services, and Joining Forces for Families were at Wednesday’s brainstorming session. Representatives from St. Mary's Hospital, University of Wisconsin Health, Madison Urban Ministry, Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk's office and the city of Madison also attended.

The CMC's English as a second language classes have already been moved to alternate sites.

Area food pantries are working together to fill the needs. The CMC food pantry served approximately 300 families per month. St. Vincent de Paul, Centro Hispano, Joining Forces for Families and St. Mark's plan to work with Community Action Coalition and Second Harvest to try and expand their food pantry hours, Bidar-Sielaff said.

LaSUP is continuing discussions with St. Mark's, Mt. Zion or a mobile food pantry to resume a meal program that was offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The CMC program served roughly 80 to 100 per meal.

St. Mary's Hospital is in discussions about how to dedicate 12 hours of nurse time to continue offering health services on the city's south side.

A follow-up meeting is planned for July 1.
