Snowshoeing is America’s fastest growing winter sport. With all of the snow, the Madison community is finding that it is easy to get in on the action.
The first “Shoe the Zoo” was held Sunday at Vilas Park. The snowshoeing event will help fund Vilas Zoo’s Arctic Passage Project for Arctic wildlife.
More than 70 people came out to enjoy the sun and fresh powder at Vilas Park. Many of the attendees were new to the sport but expert snowshoers like Crystal Neely said it’s an easy sport to take part in.
“It’s very accessible. Essentially if you can walk you can snowshoe, so you just strap them on your feet and go,” Neely said.
If you want to try the activity yourself shoe rentals cost between $25 and $50.
Next week Fontana Sports is hosting a free snow shoeing event as part of Madison Winter Festival.
