(CNN) -

How's this for irony: it turns out more men watch HBO's "Girls" than women.

According to New York magazine's Vulture (by way of Nielsen), the biggest audience sitting down to watch 20-something women living and loving in NYC each week are (drumroll, please!) - white men over 50.

It's not exactly the "Sex and the City" demographic HBO execs may have been going after, as the median age of a "Girls" fan is 43 compared to the average age of 38 for "SATC" devotees during the show's final season. (HBO, by the way, is owned by the parent company of CNN.)

A lot of those watching also don't live in the "City," as the No. 1 market for "Girls" is actually Providence, Rhode Island.

Oh, and more proof that execs may want to consider diversifying Lena Dunham's crew for season 2: Fifteen percent of the show's viewership is African American, and 10 percent is Latino.
