Movin’ On Up: The Changing Face of the School of Human Ecology
Construction on the University of Wisconsin’s School of Human Ecology building addition will begin in January, so this fall will be the Design Gallery’s last semester. This exhibit presents the architects’ models and drawings, landscaping plans, and interior design details for the addition and the renovation of the 1914 and 1915 buildings. It also offers a road map for the transition period, highlights historic photos of the school’s early years, and presents a brief overview of past Design Gallery exhibitions. A portion of the gallery will be used for class critiques, portfolio reviews, and temporary installations of student work, to be reserved on a rotating basis.

This first major museum exhibition dedicated to the bold, colorful drawings, paintings, and sculptures of Rob and Christian Clayton features the brothers' constructed objects that are narrative and deeply personal. Unique people, animals, and places that occupy the outskirts of the American psyche are used in an obsessively rich, cartoon-inspired manner, often with related audio elements incorporated.

World-renowned artist Robert Rauschenberg came to prominence in the 1950s and was most famous for his “combines,” works that incorporate painting and sculpture. He once painted on a BMW and even received a Grammy for his album design for Talking Heads’ 1983 record Speaking in Tongues. This exhibition portrays one of Rauschenberg’s many sides with fifty-nine kaleidoscopic screen prints and lithographs dating from 1968 to 1970.

Nicola López uses installations, drawings, prints, and collages to create a unique vision of urban landscape and mapping. Her portrayal of urban landscape structures and formations geometrically intertwine and morph into an unrecognizable tangles. Miriam Hall’s photographs of de-contextualized and abstracted sides of dumpsters question the presence of abstraction in artistic media. Justin Nolan’s use of tilt shift lenses to create a surreal effect on everyday life scenarios. Both photographers search to question what we think we know, what we don’t see, and what seems familiar and abstract.

Although both artists use different media, their similar style provides viewers with a chance to see similarities and differences between oil and watercolors. Hayes uses his watercolors to show the bright and colorful reflections in everyday objects, while Wilbers uses his oil paints to capture distorted self-portraits through the reflection of pots, faucets, and other reflective objects.

Showing works from two graduates of UW–Madison’s Fine Art Program, this exhibit suggests how the digital and virtual media can be used to explore the qualities of objects and ideas in cyberspace. Both artists give a mathematically perfect and virtual object physical form through digital printing. "Beck’s work draws on the idea of memento or keepsake, while Vollmer’s pieces on how the remote perfection of virtual images is analogous to religious ideals."
