'Slacker Uprising Tour' At Memorial Union Terrace

MADISON, Wis. -- "Fahrenheit 9/11" director Michael Moore will be on the University of Wisconsin campus Saturday night.
Moore's "Slacker Uprising Tour" will stop at the Memorial Union Terrace at 8:30 p.m. The event is intended to urge students to shed political apathy and register to vote, organizers said.Admission is first come, first served, but university officials expect mostly standing room only for Moore's hour-long presentation. The student program board sponsoring this event -- the Contemporary Issues and Distinguished Lecture Series Committees of the Wisconsin Union Directorate -- wanted to keep this a free event for UW-Madison students. Therefore, they decided to schedule the presentation outside at the Union rather than book a large indoor location that would require an admission charge. The university is not paying Moore to come, other than compensation for travel and security, univeristy officials said.Moore is causing controversy at another major university and could cause more trouble less than a month before the election. George Mason University invited Moore to speak and then rescinded the offer after a conservative Republican objected. The school was going to pay Moore $38,000. But Moore said he'll go anyway "in support of free speech and free expression." ( Full Story )

If You Go:
Official information from university.Voter Registration: Several tables by the Lakefront on Langdon windows on the upper Terrace will offer voter registration and information about the Union and its student committees. Campus political groups also will be offered space on the upper Terrace to hand out literature.Canvassing: If groups want to canvas they must do so at the designated tables or outside of the building on the Langdon Street side -- not on the Terrace -- or in the open expression area by the information desk near the Langdon St. entrance. Video: At first this was not going to be part of the program, but now Michael Moore will be showing a DVD on a screen on the stage during part of his presentation. However, if it rains, this may not occur. But the show will go on.Picketing policy: According to university policy, large signs supported by sticks are not allowed inside buildings on campus or to interfere with campus activities. Small, hand held signs are OK. If anyone wants to protest with large signs, they have to do so in front of the building where they are not impeding normal building operations or interfering with patrons.Furniture: To accommodate as many people as possible, student volunteers are removing most of the furniture from the Terrace. Patrons will not be allowed to remove chairs from the Lakefront on Langdon, Rathskeller, Stiftskeller or any other indoor venue.Disclaimer: Because Westside Productions is filming the event, there will be disclaimers posted that indicate that those in the audience consent to being filmed and recorded to be possibly included in future projects or promotions thereof.
