Madison's much-anticipated Overture Center opened Saturday night in full style.

Tuxedoed men escorted ladies in formal gowns through the front entrance. Limousines dropped off elegant couples for what they hoped would be an enchanting evening.

It was picturesque, reminiscent of a fairy tale.

The general public on neighboring streets crowded closer to watch Madison's own version of Hollywood unfold before them.

But as members of the general public attempted to go inside the Overture's lobby to take in the pre-performance festivities, they were caught off guard. Security ushers told the crowd only "ticketed" patrons were allowed in the Overture Center that evening. The crowd was told to come back at 11 p.m. when the lobby would be open to everyone.

"It doesn't put a damper on the Overture Center," said Robin Kite, who was turned away when she tried to enter. "I will definitely come back for a show another time. I'm just very disappointed we aren't being allowed in when the (lobby) events were publicized as free events."

The Overture Center listed the Saturday evening lobby events as "free" on its Web site.

"I'm sorry sir, only ticketed patrons are allowed right now," retorted one door greeter repeatedly.

Even the media, including, News 3 reporters and photographers were initially turned away.

The public, and media, were eventually allowed into the lobby to observe the activities. Overture media relations persons called the problem a minor communication glitch.

Lobby crowds enjoyed the sounds of the UW Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble as they strolled down each level.

At 7:45 p.m. ticketed theatregoers were allowed into Overture Hall for the first time.

"It's magnificent," said Kathy Lucido.

"I was at the opening of the Civic Center, and we thought that was something special," said Susan Springman. "That doesn’t even compare to this. It's fantastic, fantastic."

As the crowd filled the hall, many, including Gov. Jim Doyle, stood, looked around and pointed to beautiful architecture.

Elaine Davis was also at the Civic Center grand opening, and couldn't wait to attend the opening of the Overture Center.

"It's breathtaking," said Davis. "You just can't imagine, what it looks like here. It's amazing. What a gift Jerry Frautschi has given the community."

The performance began 30 minutes late with the national anthem and a rousing rendition of 'Grand Old Flag.' The show 'Stars Over Wisconsin' played to a sold out crowd.

After the performance, the black-tie crowd mingled with the more casual State Street crowd for more music in the Overture lobby.
