MADISON, Wis. -- "Fahrenheit 9/11" opens this weekend all over the country. In Madison, Westgate Art Cinema and Marcus Eastgate are the only places to take it in.
After weeks of negotiating between the movie's distributor and other Madison theaters, Westgate Cinema received confirmation on Monday it would get the film. The film's creator, Michael Moore, sparked controversy by using news clips in the film to paint the Bush administration as corrupt and inept. That has, in turn, created a campaign to pressure theaters not to show the film.In Madison, reaction has been opposite. Westgate Cinema has taken 20 to 40 calls a day, from many political groups that are booking times to see the film.Manager Erin Burns says the theater has not yet received negative calls. But if someone plans to cause a disturbance, security is ready."Since Sept. 11 we've not allowed backpacks or large purses in the auditorium and we will still not be allowing those," said Burns. "There's a lot of concern with piracy, people taking those in and taping. We just want to make sure that those standards are followed."Burns says she's happy the movie can be seen in Madison because controversial movies spark conversation and debate.Burns believes Westgate was awarded the movie because it also did well with another controversial Moore film, "Bowling for Columbine."Hilldale Theatre was also vying for the movie."'Fahrenheit 9/11'" opens this weekend at Westgate Cinema.
