Madison Marks Juneteenth Celebration

Annual Event Celebrates Abolition Of Slavery

Saturday afternoon saw the annual celebration of Juneteenth, which commemorates the 1865 abolition of slavery.

Event organizers said Madison's event, which took place in Penn Park this year, has grown in the past 20 years. They said the celebration has grown from a thousand people in its first year to a highly-anticipated annual event that brings the community together.

"I think it just shows what a great community that we live in. Everybody comes togehter and has a good time," said Mona Adams Winston, Juneteenth coordinator.

Organizers expected 10,000 to 15,000 people to attend Saturday's celebration.
