The purpose of the alternative party on Mifflin Street Saturday had been to protest the admission price and organization of Freakfest, which is set for Saturday.

But after meeting with city leaders, the student organizers said Thursday they came to see that their idea for an alternative party might not be the best and pulled the plug.

"We're withdrawing our support for the block party on Saturday. We're doing this out of concern for the residents on Mifflin Street," said Christian Von Preysing-Barry, an organizer of the alternative party.

The group of student organizers came to the consensus in a meeting with city police and Alder Mike Verveer.

"We don't want too many people on Mifflin Street, and for it to cause a problem as far as the police department is concerned in order to maintain security," Preysing-Barry said.

City leaders said the students who were organizing the party had not applied for any permits for a large gathering.

"As reasonable adults, they saw our point of view that this had potential of not being such a great idea, to put it mildly," Verveer said.

The decision alleviates the concerns of Mifflin Street residents who opposed the alternative party by signing a petition.

Mifflin Street resident Dave Spitz had been going door-to-door in an effort to rally his neighbors oppose the party. Spitz said he was worried about properly damage, assaults and other crimes as a result of an uncontrolled party on Mifflin Street.

Resident Ryan Garde is one of many who signed the petition opposing the alternative party. He said he is all for a party, but not this time around.

"We've had stuff stolen before -- recently we had a computer stolen and filed a police report," Garde said.

Although the alternative party is being cancelled, the organizers said they still disagree with the methods police and the city are using to control the celebration on State Street.

"To a certain extent you don't need lights and PA systems. I mean, it was brighter than daylight there," said Alex Kaufer, an alternative party organizer. "There's always an extent, a limit, to what you have to regulate. So we just feel we need to find a middle ground."

On Facebook, the page that advertised the alternative party Wednesday now lists it as cancelled.
