Musicians are pushing for some changes before the contract with Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra expires Aug. 31. Members said if WCO imposes a contract that is "less than favorable, their only recourse is to strike."

Members said that those hired as "extras" aren't paid enough for their talents, making half what members do.

"It's really an industry standard that everybody coming in the door gets paid a set amount. And a lot of these people have been featured as soloists. A lot of times they have very big parts," said Todd Jelen, chamber orchestra member.

Members said that a proposed attendance policy would also make it impossible for part-time musicians to hold other jobs.

"We have a world-class conductor. The only thing that isn't world-class about this orchestra is the way the musicians are treated. I don't believe, and neither does the membership of the orchestra believe, that we are being treated like professionals by the current contract," said Charles Block, a chamber orchestra performer.

With gas prices lingering just below $4 a gallon, musicians said they want to be reimbursed more for gas.

Block said he drives from Tennessee to perform and now is paid 3 cents per mile.
