Marcus To Build Entertainment Complex In Madison

Construction Could Begin Late This Year

UPDATED: 8:39 am CDT May 7, 2008

Marcus Theatres announced on Tuesday that it plans to build a state-of-the-art theater and entertainment complex on Madison's East Side.

The company said the new structure, if approved, will include much more than just a movie theater. Marcus Theatres President Bruce Olson said the complex will be a complete entertainment destination.

"Not only will we show the best Hollywood films, but among other features currently under consideration are in-theater dining, a family entertainment center, a movie-themed sports restaurant and bar and outdoor patio," Olson said.

The proposed complex will sit on 26 acres known as "The Crossing" -- just off Highway 151 and Nelson Road on Madison's East Side.

It would replace the current Eastgate Cinema on High Crossing, just a half-mile from the proposed site. Marcus officials said the closing and razing of Eastgate will coincide with the opening of the new theatre, which could be as soon as late this year.

"Following approvals with city planning, we expect construction could begin in 2008," Olson said.

Marcus said the theater will hold 2,900 people and feature 16 auditoriums -- including a 72-foot-wide Ultrascreen and another equipped to play 3-D movies.

Marcus said it also plans to develop another theater complex just off Highway 51 and Stoughton Road. Details of the construction of that complex have yet to be announced.
