With the annual downtown Halloween party just days away, city officials and Madison police are reminding people to remove their bikes from racks along State Street.

City officials said that bikers should remove their rides from racks along State Street by 6 a.m. on Friday.

"If there's a big crowd here, and the crowd starts to move, and this rack is here and the bikes are here, you can get pushed over them and possibly injured," said Jim Nikora, property supervisor at the Madison Police Department. "If we pick these bikes up on Friday morning, were not going to be able to get them back to the owners."

Police said they will start removing all bikes on Friday. They will also remove bike racks from the 500 and 600 blocks of State Street.

Officials are also advising people to register their bikes.

Madison Alderwoman Robbie Webber said that bike owners should know that they can park their bikes on some side streets as well as area parking ramps. She also advised those who have their bikes taken to contact the Madison police property room.
