HOUSTON -- County music star Doug Supernaw was committed to a mental institution on Monday, Houston TV station KPRC reported.

Humble, Texas, police arrested Supernaw and charged him with misdemeanor drug possession on Nov. 8. Investigators said Supernaw had been found with marijuana at a club.

Supernaw spent six months in jail in 2001 for contempt of court and failure to pay $135,000 in child support. He spent another 14 days in jail for resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer in 2003.

According to CMT.com, Supernaw is from Houston and briefly attended college on a golf scholarship. He quit college in favor pursuing his music career.

CMT reported that Supernaw had a long string of bad luck. He reportedly broke his neck while surfing, and shortly after his neck brace was removed, he was in a head-on auto collision.

Then, all of his band's gear was stolen in Ohio before Supernaw nearly died from a case of food poisoning, CMT reported.

Some of his more popular songs include "Reno" and the big hit "I Don't Call Him Daddy."
