MADISON, Wis. -- A popular video by two Madison filmmakers won the prestigious "George Lucas Selects" award in the Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge at Celebration IV in Los Angeles.
SLIDESHOW: Images: 'Star Wars' Celebration IV"Chad Vader -- Day Shift Manager: Episode I" was chosen out of 19 finalists by Lucas himself. The filmmakers, Matt Sloan and Aaron Yonda, said they were very honored by the recognition."We found out we won the big prize and we were kind of in shock. It was really amazing. We didn't think we were going to win," Sloan said. "We were just happy that George Lucas was even going to put eyes on 'Chad Vader,' and when we found out it was his favorite one, it was really awesome."Yonda said that there were a record number of submissions to the contest this year."I think there were submissions from five continents and just a huge number of people sending submissions in, so we definitely knew we had some tough hurdles," Sloan said.Although they said they haven't been contacted by Lucas, they said that he did put out a press release praising the film and making a joke on Aaron's name, calling him "Aaron Yoda" before correcting it to "Yonda."Sloan said that he is flying out to San Francisco this week to work on another video game for LucasArts."So that's pretty exciting, and it's another acknowledgement from the Lucas empire that we have something to offer," Sloan said.Sloan and Yonda said that, after their big win, they would like to test the waters at Lucasfilm."We made the eight ('Chad Vader') episodes with all volunteer labor and we weren't really making any money from it," Sloan said. "We can't really keep making it for free forever, so now we want to see if there is room in this for us to start having a budget to make 'Chad Vader.'"And while the filmmakers said they have been taking a break from "Chad Vader" to work on other projects, they said they plan to start work on season two by the end of the summer.NOTE: "Chad Vader -- Day Shift Manager" will air on Spike TV on May 29 at 11:25 p.m.
