UW officials say budget cuts represent challenge
UW: Taxpayer support cut by $181M
Officials with the University of Wisconsin System say it will be a challenge for UW universities to deal with expected budget cuts, but they're committed to figuring out a way to make things work.
Several UW System officials spoke Thursday at a board of regents meeting in Milwaukee. It's the first board meeting since a legislative committee voted to slash the UW System budget.
UW System senior vice president David Miller said the proposed budget would cut taxpayer support by $181 million. But he said the UW System would really face cuts of $202 million because of additional unfunded obligations.
The Joint Finance Committee had slashed the UW System's budget in part because the system had about $650 million in reserves at the end of the last fiscal year.
