WISC NEWS 3.
sound of music..
THE SOUND OF THE UKULELE DRIFTS THROUGH LEE BRIGGS'
-- MATH CLASS.
IT'S MATH - NOT MUSIC CLASS.
WHAT'S THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE UKULELE AND MATH?
MORE ON THAT IN A SEC.
BRIGGS TEACHES MATH AND LANGUAGE ARTS AT TOKI MIDDLE
SCHOOL IN MADISON.
HE FOLLOWED HIS DAD INTO THE PROFESSION.
lee briggs/from an early age i was in the school all
it was an extention of our house.
BRIGGS CLASSROOM IS VERY MUCH HIS OWN.
HE REFERS TO IT AS HIS CLUBHOUSE.
ITEMS IN HERE REFLECT HIS PERSONALITY.
THAT'S WHERE THE UKULELE AND HIS THE COMIC BOOKS COME
THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH TEACHING.
THEY DO REFLECT HIS AUTHENTIC-SELF.
AND THAT'S THE POINT.
i'm not just the person teaching math.
i'm not just the person harping on them to get their
home work done.
there are layers to me.
HE TEACHES A UNIT OF LANGUAGE ARTS AND FOUR UNITS
OF MATH AND SEES ABOUT A HUNDRED KIDS A DAY.
HIS BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS MAKING THE WORK RELEVANT
-- MAKING IT INTERESTING FOR THESE YOUNG MINDS.
ideally, you want them to think linear equations are
you can't always do that so sometimes I settle for
i want to be good at math so i do this.
IF A STUDENT NEEDS A CONFIDENCE BOOST .
THEY MAY BE HANDED A UKULELE.
i love ukulele because it's a simple instrument to
learn anybody can pick it up.
i can give it to a kid and five minutes later they
know three cords.
they know how to play some simple songs .
they can succeed at something.
STUDENTS HAVE SHOWN THEIR APPRECIATION FOR THE UKULELE
SIGNING THE BACK OF SOME OF ONES HANGING ON HIS CLASSROON
i love those moments where i know i've done my job.
i know that a student is better at something because
of the effort i put in.
