Police Watch For Speeders In School Zones

MADISON, Wis. -- Thousands of area students are headed back to school on Wednesday and along with more children on the streets, residents should expect to see an increased police presence as well.Madison police will be cracking down on drivers speeding in school zones through the end of the week. Police are promoting safety by warning drivers to slow down in school zones, stay alert, watch for children and obey crossing guard commands.Area teachers are also ready for school after digging into their own pockets to stock their classrooms with supplies.Lowell Elementary teacher Joseph Martin said it comes with the job."I know every time that it comes around Christmas or birthday time, on my list to family and friends is gift cards and things like that to the Learning Shop, so that I can buy more stuff for my room," Martin said.Martin said he's spent about $300 on supplies for the upcoming school year, which is less than the national average of $500.
