Marquette University's Pulling Of Job Offer Creates Controversy

University Says Sexual Orientation Didn't Play Role In Decision

Posted: 5:31 pm CDT May 7, 2010

Marquette University is denying that a women's sexual orientation is the reason a job offer was rescinded.

Marquette students posted their protest on YouTube after Jodi O'Brien, a professor at Seattle University, had the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences position taken away.

Students and some faculty said they believe the university balked at hiring an openly gay dean because of pressure from donors.

"What kind of message are we sending to our students in 2010 that we can't have someone based on their sexual orientation?" said Kathleen Fugler, a Marquette student.

The school says O'Brien's sexual orientation never came into the equation.

Marquette said her published works do not relate to the school's Catholic mission and identity.
