MADISON, Wi. -- Some parents in the Monona Grove School District are trying to prevent their elementary school from closing. At a meeting on Wednesday night, parents who send their children to Maywood Elementary School gathered for a brainstorming session. Their goal was to keep the neighborhood school open.School district officials said that budget woes are forcing them to consider a plan that would close Maywood Elementary, and send all sixth-graders to Glacial Drumlin School starting next fall. Some parents disagree with this idea. "I think we need to remember our community is awesome. And we are a community. We're built on families that have lived here, that have stayed here. And children that are growing up here where their parents grew up," said Dawn Shaw, a Maywood parent. "It's a great community and I think this just shows that people banding together can actually come together for a common good."The parents agreed to canvass door-to-door this weekend with a petition to save their school and plan to rally at the next school board meeting."We're just trying really hard to save our little school, Maywood. And we're trying to come up with a way to do that," said Shaw.
