Ahead of what would have been her 23rd birthday, the family of slain University of Wisconsin-Madison student Brittany Zimmermann is awarding a scholarship in her name.

The scholarship was given to a freshman student from Zimmermann's hometown of Marshfield. The recipient plans a career in medicine.

Zimmermann was a medical microbiology and immunology major who wanted to be a doctor.

She was killed in her downtown Madison apartment in April 2008. There have been no arrests in connection with her death.
