Officials Break Ground On New UW Union South

New Building Slated To Open In Spring Of 2011

Updated: 9:21 pm CDT June 9, 2009

A groundbreaking on Tuesday marked the next phase of building a new Union South on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The new building is being built at the site of the old Union South at Dayton and Randall streets.

The old union south was built in 1971 and was torn down to make way for a new, larger building that will better serve students, staff and alumni.

"In a world saturated with technology, that connects us instantly with anyone, anywhere, real-life, real-time connections between people are becoming more and more rare and therefore more and more important," said Mark Guthier, of Wisconsin Union Administration and Marketing.

The new building is slated to open in the spring of 2011.

In a 2006 referendum, UW-Madison students agreed to help pay for more than half of the $94 million project.
