UW Report Finds Progress, Challenges On Safety

Board Will Discuss Report Thursday

Updated: 11:05 am CDT June 2, 2009

University of Wisconsin campuses have made progress on plans to prevent and respond to mass shootings but budget problems will slow some of them, according to a new report.

The UW System report says campuses are giving students more information about safety risks, have teams to identify and intervene with potentially dangerous students and have systems to notify students in the event of an emergency.

But the report says plans that "require extensive staff and funding commitments" will take longer to fully implement because of a lack of funding.

Those initiatives include hiring more mental health counselors to treat troubled students and developing plans for how campuses will resume services after a crisis.

The Board of Regents will discuss the report on Thursday.
