Students Construct 'Instant Libraries'

WoodLINKS Project Teams Students With Community Center

Updated: 9:26 am CDT June 2, 2009

The Lussier Community Education Center is stocked with several "instant libraries" just in time for the summer season.

Students from James Madison Memorial High School spent the year building 20 bookcases that were presented to the center on the city's West Side on Monday afternoon.

"Every time we make something, it's nice to see that someone will enjoy it and especially people who might not have it otherwise," said Taylor Trummer, a senior at Memorial High School.

The project was part of a new district-wide woodworking curriculum called WoodLINKS. Its goal is to expose students to the wood manufacturing industry, which has a shortage of workers, according to WoodLINKS Web site.

The book shelves will be stocked with books that were donated to the Lussier Community Education Center, located at 55 South Gammon Road, for students in its Elementary After School Program. The donations were provided through the Alicia Ashman Public Library and individual donations.

The woodworking project was funded through a grant by the Foundation for Madison Public Schools.
