Dane County's monthly teen newspaper won awards in the annual "Coming Up Taller Awards" in Washington, D.C.

The awards, part of the president's committee on the arts and humanities, recognize outstanding after-school programs around the country.

First lady Laura Bush welcomed this year's winners to the White House Friday.

"Because of the programs that you represent, young people are building the confidence to paint, dance, speak, sing and in every one of their communities, to walk taller. Thank you all very, very much," Bush said.

Accepting the award on behalf of the Simpson Street Free Press was associate editor Sisi Chen, senior teen editor Deidre Green and chief of staff Andrew Hazlett.

Each winner receives $10,000 and a plaque.
