Madison Schools To Cease Ag Education Courses

Rainwater Cites Lack Of Funding For Program's End

UPDATED: 3:48 pm CDT June 2, 2008

The Madison Metropolitan School District will end its agricultural education program after more than six decades of instruction.

Mary Klecker, who's retiring, has led the program for three decades.

In a letter to the school board and state officials, Klecker criticizes district administrators for ending the program, saying they "lack a grasp" of the state's agricultural heritage and the importance of agribusiness.

Superintendent Art Rainwater said that the decision to end agricultural education came down to a lack of money because of the state's revenue limits on school districts.
